WEC 34 Results and Discussion




Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver



Urijah Faber took this fight via Unanimous Decision. The first round began with two right hooks by Faber. Faber continued to control every exchange with his lead right hand. Faber slips on the mat and Pulver obtains top control. Pulver then takes an accidental finger to the eye but recovers quickly. Pulver lands a right knee on Faber's chin. Faber continues to control the distance with his right hand. The second round begins with Pulver getting kicked incidently in the groin by Faber. After Pulver recovers from the inadvertant kick and gets taken down by Faber. Pulver gets back to his feet and gets dropped by a lightning fast combination from Urijah. Pulver recovers from the combination and lands a straight left to Faber. Faber shoots in for a single leg takedown but Pulver sprawls away. The third round begins with another right hand lead from Faber. Pulver kicks Faber strongly in the liver. Faber answers back with a strong kick of his own. Urijah shoots in for a takedown and Jens Pulver ends up on top. Faber ends up sweeping Pulver and starts to reign down elbows on Pulver. Pulver uses the butterfly guard and ties up Faber's head to get the fight stood back up. At the start of the fourth round you can see Pulver has a mouse under his right eye. Pulver slips on the canvas and eats a small flurry of punches. Faber looks to be rocked and eats three more straight rights but still stays in the pocket. Faber gats a takedown and finished the round dropping down elbows in the guard of Jens Pulver. The bell for the fifth round sounds as Pulver sprawls out of a takedown attempt by Urijah Faber. Pulver lands a left hook and backs away from Faber. Pulver lands two more left hooks to the body and the head. Faber takes down Pulver to secure his victory. Urijah Faber looked very sharp in this fight and clearly was the better fighter tonight. He used great head movement to frustrate Pulver during all five rounds and stopped Pulver from landing his dreaded left hand. Faber earned a hard fought decision but the fight was a lot closer than the scorecards showed.



Miguel Torres vs. Yoshiro Maeda



Miguel Torres defends his bantamweight belt with a third round TKO. The first round starts out with Torres going for a head kick that is caught by Maeda takes Torres down to the canvas. Maeda lets Torres up but makes him eat two knees in the process. Torres begins to bleed from his nose and pulls guard going for an omaplata. Maeda escapes from the submission attempt and both fighters are now in a standing position. Torres throws some wild kicks and punches but nothing really lands. The fighter are now trading right hands and knees. Maeda lands a kick to the body and the head to finish the round. The second round begins and Maeda lands a right hand and a kick. Maeda sends Torres a hard body kick to Torres right side. Torres then lands a left hook and a couple of knees to Maeda. Maeda responds by landing a nice flurry of his own. Torres slips and gets caught in a heel hook. Torres grabs Maeda's foot and also tries to lock in his own heel hook. Maeda frees himself from Torres' heel hook and attempts a kneebar. Torres goes for a guillotine and give up the submission for the mount. The bell for the third round sounds and Torres is starting to find his range for his jab. Maeda's right eye is starting to swell up quickly. Torres strikes Maeda with a right knee on the chin. Maeda's left eye is completely swelled up and he cannot defend anything coming in that direction. Referee Herb Dean is forced to stop the fight due to the swelling of Maeda's left eye. Maeda showed everyone more than expected and gave Torres a run for his money.



"The Reverend" Chuck Grigsby vs. Mark Munoz



Mark Munoz took this fight via TKO in the first round. The first round began with a shoot by Munoz but Grigsby sprawls well and attempts a front choke. Munoz finally takes down his opponent and has trouble mounting any offense. Munoz stood up in Grigsby's guard and lunges in to graze Grigsby in the head. Grigsby tries to work for a kimura but is caught in the half guard. Munoz begins to land more right hands and as Grigsby starts looking for a kneebar and he gets knocked out. Munoz finishes Grigsby 4:15 into the first round.



Kenneth Alexander vs. "Razor" Rob McCullough



Rob McCullough takes this fight via split decision. The first round starts out as Kenneth Alexander pulls guard. Alexander can do nothing with the position. The fighters continue to throw weak leg kicks for the first two minutes. The fans begin to boo and McCullogh throws a head kick that grazes Alexander. Alexander rushes in and gets caught with a short right hand and a flying knee. McCullough finishes the round by sprawling out of Alexander takedowns. The bell for the second round sounds and McCullough starts out the round with a lazy jab. McCullogh now has a small cut below his right eye. Alexander obtains a takedown but cannot hold "Razor" Rob down on the canvas. Alexander scores with a left head kick and an uppercut. The crowd begins to boo once again as neither fighter can seem to take control of the fight. Alexander ends the round with another takedown. The third round begins as both fighters start to pick up the tempo. Alexander lands a few right hands and McCullough lands a shin to Alexander's mouth and a couple of leg kicks. McCullogh accidently knees Alexander in the groin. McCullough continues to stuff Alexander's takedowns. McCullough wins the fight 30-27 by two judges and Alexander has one judge's approval 29-28.
